When discussing SEO, sometimes it seems as if it is always the same old thing, pointing out the same old ideas. While this may be true to a certain extent, the fact is there is always something new to learn about obtaining the best SEO - even when using those same old ideas. If this was not true, every website would have the best page rank. However, since that is not the case, there is always something new to strive for. More often than not, it is the basic principles of SEO that most websites are lacking. This is what makes attaining that Number 1 page rank so challenging. Improving page rank requires revisiting the basics of SEO frequently in order to ensure that even the little things are being taking care of.

Keywords - The Same But Different

Keywords will always be critical for generating the best SEO. However, the way in which they are used continues to change as search algorithms change. Practices like keyword stuffing to “attract” web crawlers have now become detrimental to SEO. Instead, as indexers become more precise, good techniques for keyword use are dependent upon the site, the content, and the audience. Long-tailed keywords, semantic (LSI) keywords, and location keywords have become the most important techniques of the day for getting Google’s attention. So, while keywords remain an essential part of obtaining the best SEO, the ways they are used continues to change.

Meta Title and Description Tags

One of the most basic, yet important principles in the construction of any web page (and a principle that is commonly overlooked), is using Meta tags.  Page titles are important to help web crawlers quickly find and index a page, while Meta description is invaluable in helping people know whether a page is the one they want to click on. By failing to include well-written meta descriptions - which should include main keywords; a brief, but accurate summary of the website; and locations - site builders allow users to pass over search results in favor of other sites that immediately give them that information. Rather than leaving searchers wondering what the content is about, users should be able to discern from the search results that the link they see is the site they want to visit.

Important Inbound Links

As most SEO companies know, backlinks or inbound links, are valuable for generating great page rank; however, not every inbound link is created equal. Where those links originate from is what matters. It is not enough to simply have these links if the sites they come from are lower value websites. Having more incoming links does matter, but ideally, they need to be from higher ranking, more valuable websites. This helps create credibility. The best way to get higher quality inbound links is to keep content and site quality high, and to strive for good page rank using the other methods of obtaining a well-ranking site. Frequent blogging, regular social media updates, press releases and participating in online discussions are all great ways to attract positive attention for a website - which in turn, frequently results in backlinks. Participate with good websites in the hope of gaining their attention in return.

Based on this information, it should be easy to see that while these principles for building good SEO are not really new, the methods in which these goals are met change over time. Keeping up with Google’s algorithm changes is essential in order to achieve the best SEO, since these changes continue to dictate the way to attain a good page rank. When it comes to revisiting the basic principles of SEO, it is never possible to learn too much, as the lesson is continually changing!
