Google’s mobile-friendly algorithm that went into effect in April 2015 was coined “MobileGeddon” by web masters and SEO specialists, This term was based on the expectations of web-wide destruction due to non-compliance; apparently, these changes have left mixed results. This algorithm update placed a high priority on mobile-friendliness, with the threat of penalizing web pages that did not comply. Prior to this release, Google warned website owners this change was coming and that it could dramatically affect page rank. Now that this algorithm change has taken place, some SEO company experts are wondering if all the fuss about MobileGeddon was not intentional on Google’s part to further control SEO.

What Was All That Fuss About?

This past April, Google released a mobile-friendly update. Although it did affect some websites, the damages seem to be much less significant than many anticipated. There could be several different reasons for this. One thought is that more website and search engine optimization experts brought web pages into compliance with Google’s recommendations for mobile-friendly use. The fact that fewer sites were negatively affected than may have been expected is a good thing. It proves that people are paying attention to Google regarding its warnings and algorithm updates. Still, non-mobile websites are slipping as dramatically as expected in rank, although such an effect is likely to continue.

How Google Is Changing Web Usage

Arguments that Google posts alarmist warnings to get website designers to comply with their efforts to shape the internet could be valid. In this specific case, even though statistics show that well over 50 percent of web traffic is through mobile devices, conversions are lower than half what they normally are on non-mobile devices. Adsense and other advertising have not been as mobile-use effective. If mobile use is increasing and conversions are not, this is likely the motivation behind Google pushing mobile-friendliness.

Mobile-friendliness introduces other mobile algorithm technology, such as increasing advertising efforts to include “Buy Now” buttons in search results and noticing pages that have this kind of mobile-friendly technology. Helping a business get more conversions is always a good thing, although there are some questions about how Google is accomplishing this. Some connect this to Google’s possible desire to increase revenue and sales, where most of the users are headed, by forcing compliance to prevent penalties.

Is There An Algorithm Warning Psychology?

Since Google never actually discloses exactly what it does, web designers and SEO consultants can only guess at any possible answers. Google may be tapping into the psychological aspect of getting results by creating fear of the unknown. Their attempt at promoting compliance by making sure a website is mobile-friendly to be recognized by search engines may not seem like such a bad thing. Yet the bigger question is whether Google is dictating how web searches must be done to ensure that SEO follows them rather than the user. A positive user experience is always the goal; however, is Google now manipulating the makeup of a positive user experience?

It is also important to be aware that Google does not even mention minor algorithm updates, which many SEO companies discover through website analytics and other monitoring methods. This leaves many questioning Google’s true intent – and whether they are making websites comply, even when compliance is not  known to bring increased benefits to a business.

The fact remains that Google is looking for mobile-friendliness upon which it determines whether or not to display a website in its SERP’s. This means every SEO company must bring all websites into compliance as well as continue with other SEO marketing methods for the best results!
